About

Founded in my Long Island, NY kitchen in 2014, my goal was to offer a more healthful alternative to the detergent-based, grocery store soaps or body washes most people applied to their skin every day, yet to do it in a way that was aesthetically pleasing and excited the senses!

Having crafted pressed flower designs in the past, my initial desire was to create a natural soap that could incorporate these multi-colored, textural flowers:

Unfortunately, it didn't take long to discover that most of the flowers I loved to craft with cannot be utilized in soap making without unacceptable compromise to color and form. My path was set nonetheless, and through seemingly endless research and experimentation (thanks to family and friends for being my willing test subjects), my deliciously scented, skin-loving soaps were born into what are now our LakeShore Soaps' Chunky Collection.

These visually appealing Chunky soaps lather well and moisturize as they retain all the natural glycerin often removed from mass produced soap (yes, finally, no more dry skin!) For these, we use the soap-casting method (melt & pour) with saponified bases containing the highest quality vegetable oils and other natural skin-nourishing ingredients available. We add in mineral-rich natural clays or charcoal to help draw out impurities that can clog pores, as well as a variety of botanicals and natural exfoliants to brighten and refresh skin. The soaps are deliciously scented with essential oils and/or fragrance to enrich your cleansing experience and overall sense of well-being. Our collection has grown to over 40 different varieties (all of which are soy- free and cruelty-free, and most of which are vegan). Best of all, LakeShore Soaps creates ALL products without the use of SLS (Sodium Laurel Sulfate), phthalates, artificial dyes or parabens. There should be no compromises with what we cleanse our skin with on a daily basis, and we're happy to be creating a product that's so healthful and enjoyable to people of all ages.

LakeShore Soaps was originally named The Chunky Soap Shoppe, because we wanted a name that reflected our soaps being over-sized and chunky in shape (whether rectangular, square or round). Unlike most other soaps on the market which range from 3 to 4 ounces in weight, ours start in at 5.25 oz. for the shaving soaps and often go well beyond 6 oz. for the rectangular bars. Because they're handcrafted and hand cut (some styles uneven by design), there will be variations from one bar to another. All soaps are made in small batches to ensure complete attention and maximum freshness.

In 2019, following our move to the shores of Lake Michigan in the beautiful city of Chicago, we made some changes: a new business name to reflect the new location, i.e., LakeShore Soaps, and an updated website. Chunky Soap Shoppe soaps are now our signature Chunky Collection within LakeShore Soaps, though nothing has changed regarding the soaps themselves. You'll still love them as much as you always did ;-)

Additionally in 2019, we launched our new soap line, Cheryl's Petals. These vegan artisan soaps are handmade from scratch via the cold-process method, where each of our recipes are designed and curated to create the most skin-loving and awesome natural soaps possible. They're lathering, long-lasting, hard soaps that rinse clean and fully refresh. We truly believe you'll look forward to taking your next shower or bath. Seriously, they're that good!

Both collections (Cheryl's Petals cold process soaps, and our signature Chunky glycerin line) are part of LakeShore Soaps, and soap is all we make and sell! After spending a few years at arts and craft fairs, you'll now only find us online. While you can't hold or smell the soaps over the internet (too bad!), we do our best to describe each one for you. Selling directly to the consumer allows us to utilize premium ingredients while ensuring you get the best prices possible. If we were to wholesale our products to stores, they'd need to mark them up in order to be profitable, and this would most likely result in a compromised product and/or higher end cost for the customer.

If you have any questions, comments, or new product suggestions, feel free to drop us an email at lakeshoresoaps@gmail.com or fill out the form below. And don't forget to follow on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram where we'll occasionally post special discounts and promotions. If you like our soaps, please help spread the word on social media!

Thanks and have a deliciously clean day ;-)
